Indigo Hippo Turns 8!

To celebrate our 8 years of providing donated, reusable, and upcycled materials to the OTR community and beyond, we’re throwing a little Birthday Party, and you’re invited!🎈

Join us here at the shop on Friday 3/29 from 5-7pm for treats, collage making, and a Collaborative Gallery Show!

How the Collaborative Gallery Show works:
⭐️ All are welcome
⭐️ Bring an artwork ready-to-hang and we’ll hang it right then and there
⭐️ Size: 8x8” or smaller, and $25 or under
⭐️ Work will be for sale and full proceeds will support Indigo Hippo mission!
⭐️ We’ll make you a show tag with your name and socials

We opened in March of 2016, with some big dreams and a small shop of materials.

Since our founding, we’ve diverted over 190,000 lbs of materials from the waste stream. That’s pretty incredible and approximately 28 adult hippos worth of supplies that would’ve otherwise ended up in the landfill. But instead, we get the pleasure of bringing creativity to those who need it!

Whether you have donated materials or dollars, shopped, volunteered, shown in our gallery or cheered us on from afar, YOU are why we exist, and we cannot thank you enough! ⭐️

"Cut / Together"

Join us for the opening reception of "Cut / Together"!

“You may know poetry as words on a page, but what if it also lives inside of works of art? In this small exhibition, poet, artist, editor, and educator Kay E. Bancroft (they/them) brings poetry to the walls in the form of collage and visually-based poetry. Compiled almost entirely with materials from Indigo Hippo, they have written and created visually striking works surrounding the natural world, the body, intergenerational relationships, queerness, and more.”

We will have snacks and drinks, and the shop will be open during the reception to purchase materials. See you there!

The show will run from Friday 2/23 - Friday 3/15, and will be available for viewing at the Indigo Hippo Storefront and Gallery on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 12pm - 6pm.

Trash Mapping: Gallery Opening Reception

Join us for the gallery opening reception of Trash Mapping: Weaving Our Communal Landscape featuring the art of Rowe Schnure, a weaver and facilitator based in Cincinnati

“Plastic soda bottles, chip bags, fast food containers, aluminum cans - these are all common parts of our communal landscapes, whether we notice them or not. The brands may vary, but the material—mostly plastics— remains the same. Can this waste, when collected and mapped, provide insights to the community interaction with place? This question guided my residency with Springboard for the Arts in Fergus Falls, MN. During the two weeks I was there in 2019 I mapped their downtown area by collecting street trash and breaking it down into weavings. Each weaving then represented one block of the area.

Weaving is a great metaphor for understanding the systems at play in our collective lives. The longitudinal threads, known as warp, can be seen as the grid in which our cities and roads are broken into. The weft, lateral thread, is the found trash that has been sorted/cleaned and deconstructed to weave a map visualizing human interaction with place.

I also facilitated trash weaving workshops as a way for community examination of place and product. These community weaving workshops used non-recyclable materials pulled from the local solid waste department. We wove in the shape of Otter Tail County, where the materials were found, which created a visual representation of the area and its byproduct waste. Through this process we questioned patterns of waste and cultivated a deeper understanding of the larger systems in the processing of waste.” -Rowe Schnure

The gallery opening will be held at Indigo Hippo on Friday, August 25th between 6-8 PM and their work will be on display through September 23rd.
